JULIANA PATON – awesome woman and artist.
Years ago, as young mother with a desire for creative expression, I began art lessons with Juliana Paton in Vereeniging. This proved to be the beginning of a long and wonderful journey in art. I still catch myself having conversations with her in my head. She was my mentor and friend.
She always was, to me, an example of how to go about life: she was first and foremost devoted to God and very aware of what she believed was required of her; a strong wife, mother, grandmother, a woman with strong opinions without being opinionated or judgemental.
I honour her as an artist: her amazing technique, her craftsmanship, her creativity, and above all, her total honesty and devotion to the medium, the purity of the medium, her unmovable belief that you always only work from life.
Recently, Franci posted a painting on facebook (Kunspalet) in a technique that, in a way, reminded me of a use of colour sometimes found in Juliana’s work. It resembles the tiny contrasts of red in a green landscape. I immediately started an online search for works by Juliana, and…. nothing! I subsequently contacted Wilma Paton, daughter in law, whose phone number I still had.
Long story short: James and Wilma actually came to my house with some photographs of works in their possession, giving me the mandate to use them. I visited Julie’s daughter Pat in Brackenfell, intending to photograph Julie’s scrap books while visiting my daughter and soon realising that it was way to big a task to complete in a mere 4 days. Pam wrapped them up, handed it to me and told me to work them through on my own time. To entrust that treasure to me!
It is going to be quite a mammoth task to work through the scrapbooks. I intend posting from it on a regular basis with the ultimate, huge dream being a coffee table book on this great artist.
Thank you, Paton family, for trusting me with putting information and examples of work out there. She deserves to be seen! And I am so excited!

Hallo Charlotte, James sent me the particulars of the website you so kindly created about my Mom, Juliana, I am so thankful to you for doing this as I am not very adapt at doing this sort of thing. Thank you for taking the time and trouble to do it; the scrap book I gave you contained a good amount of details of many years of Moms life and you must have spent much time going through it all. Hi Pam. Trusting you are all well? The last time I chatted to Aunty Julie was in the early 2000’s. She was living with you in De Aar in the Cape, if I remember correctly. I have 3 of her Originals. Sadly we are downscaling, so I can only keep the one that was dear to Granny Vera, Mom Jean & Yvonne. It was basically passed down from Granny, to Mom, to me. What can I do with the others.
